The state of Hawaii is as diverse as the people who call the islands home. We asked some of the members of the Aloha Living Network and Hawaii Information Service staff to help us put together a sampling of the best spots, music, sunsets, and more from around Hawaii.

Just as each island is unique, almost every visitor or local will experience the island sights and sounds with a different sense of appreciation and awe. Enjoy the Best of Summer 2008!

Favorite Place to Take a Long Weekend

Big Island

  • Ryan (Webmaster): "Volcano Village or Hilo. The cooler, wetter east side of The Big Island isn't 'postcard Hawaii,' but it's real Hawaii. Slower, quieter, friendlier. We shun hotels in favor of vacation rentals in Volcano Village, so close to the volcano you can't help but bask in the intangible but omnipresent energy of Pele, of Mother Nature. And Hilo town just feels like home to me."
  • Silvia (Accounting) : "Mauna Lani."
  • Casey (Customer Service): "Waikiloa."

Kauai

  • Michael (Designer/Producer): "Golfing! I'm not picky about where, but if I have to choose, I love to spend a long weekend playing golf on the North Shore of Kauai."
  • Bob (Customer Service): "Hanalei. I like the laid back attitudes and wonderful little shops to explore."
  • Beth (Marketing): "Koloa."

Maui

  • Bob: "Hana! The road itself is an adventure in patience and beauty, and when you get there and take the hike up Pipiwai Trail you'll be treated to many of natures wonders. Beware they close the trail down when it rains (we only got to hike half of it last time and came back covered in mud! What a blast."
  • Novena (Research): "Anywhere on Maui is magical!"

Oahu

  • Debbie and Faith (Accounting): "Turtle Bay Resort!"
  • Sue Ann (Membership): "Turtle Bay on the North Shore."
  • Colleen (Sales): "Turtle Bay Resort."
  • Gay (Research): "Waikiki."

Best Sunset Views in Hawaii?

"On Maui, Kaanapali was one of the prettiest sunsets I've watched on Maui as the sun drifts behind Molokai and Lanai. However if you are like me with a taste for unusual sunsets then I highly recommend trying to catch sunset on the top of Haleakala Crater. It was the first time I got to see sunset on the top of the clouds, the other time I went was on a clear day which got to watch sunset with a complete view of the towns and mountains all around."
